THE CONNECTION / VALERIE → CALL ON ME

A voice that
found another life.

Steve Winwood and Will Jennings’s Valerie first appeared in 1982 and returned in a 1987 remix. Eric Prydz’s Call on Me brought its vocal idea to a new dance audience in 2004.

Prydz described beginning with a Valerie-based demo in 2003. Winwood then recorded a new vocal for the release: Prydz told DJ Mag that the finished record no longer contained the original sample.

Listen for the connection: a memorable phrase can become the centre of a dance record. The melody carries familiarity; repetition gives it a different role.
